Disney released the first full-length Mulan trailer on Thursday morning, giving fans a preview of the upcoming live-action adaptation. The movie stars Yifei Liu as Mulan; Donnie Yen as Commander Tung; Jason Scott Lee as Böri Khan; and Yoson An as Cheng Honghui. The film also features Gong Li as Xianniang and Jet Li as the Emperor.

This live-action movie was directed by Niki Caro, working from a screenplay by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver, and Elizabeth Martin & Lauren Hynek. The movie is based on the narrative poem “The Ballad of Mulan.”

While older Disney fans may already know the Disney tale, the official description reads, “When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father.” The studio continued, “Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation…and a proud father.”

Mulan is scheduled to hit theaters in March 2020. The animated movie released in 1998, but it didn’t open at the top of the box office. Directed by Barry Cook, the film opened in second-place behind FOX’s The X-Files with a $22.7M opening weekend. That didn’t slow Mulan down, and the film went on to make over $304M worldwide for the studio.

The last live-action Disney adaptation to hit theaters was Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. While the film didn’t beat the original’s $69.4M opening and $758.5M worldwide gross, the sequel did debut at the top of the domestic charts with $36M, and went on to make over $480.6M worldwide. The next Disney project scheduled for theaters is Star Wars: Rise of the Skywalker, which is releasing on December 20th against Universal Pictures’ CATS.
