True Wireless earbuds have gone from luxury to necessity over the last few years. The Apple Airpods Pro offer touch controls to customize the Active Noise Cancellation feature, which can be adjusted if you need to hear the train announcements or if their are any cars around you, and you also have access to Siri whenever you need the AI. The charging case is thin and compact enough to fit in your jeans pocket, and it supplies power for 24hrs of listening.

At $249 they are the most expensive model that Apple offers, but they are also the best option on the market if you use an Apple device. The box has three sizes of tapered silicone tips to choose from, so you get a great fit, and they sweat and water resistant.


Sony WF-1000XM

Sony recently updated the WF-1000XM3 model with a fan-requested feature. With the most recent update, users can now control the volume directly on the device, skipping the need to use your phone’s system or an AI to adjust the volume. Even before the update, the WF-1000XM3 model was one of the top choices on the market, offering terrific sound, battery life, and noise cancellation. Sony has been on a winning streak in the noise cancellation department since the release of its over-ear noise cancellation headphones, and the tech ported well to the true wireless option.

Just like the Apple Airpods Pro, you can adjust the ANC , and you can further customize your sound through the Sony app on your device. These models won’t win style points in most reviews, but they are some of the most customizable options and offer top-tier noise cancellation. Sony boasts 24bit audio signal processing with the WF-1000XM3 model, and 24hr playtime with the carrying case. Sony also stated that a 10min quick charge can give you another 90min of playtime. Just like Apple, you’ll find three sizes of earbuds, made from silicone rubber. These also use a USB C charger, and the box comes with a cable.


Powerbeats Pro

The Apple Airpods Pro could be used during your workout, but for heavy activity, you might want to try the Powebeats Pro. You will still get all-day battery life and Siri support, but the behind-the-ear design will keep these headphones secure as your climbing rocks or jetting down a mountain. These offer noise isolation, not ANC, and are designed for workouts and active lifestyles.

You can enjoy 9 hours of listening time on a single charge with the Powerbeats Pro, and the case gives you more than 24hrs of playback when you need it. Since they are designed for workouts, they are lightweight and securely stay in your ear. The Powerbeats Pro are also sweat and water resistance, and they feature volume and playback controls on each earbud.



Audio Technica ATH-CKS5TW

If you hate the hard plastic shell of the original Airpods, and prefer in-ear headphones that are under $200, then you can check out Audio-Technica’s latest model. You’ll find direct controls for playback and volume, and you get physical buttons instead of touch.  This model offers 15hrs of playback on a full charge, and the case gives you two additional charges for 45 total hours.

The ATH-CKS5TW model also offers an auto power function, and the headphones turn on when removed from the charging case. The headphones will also turn off when you place them in the case to charge them.  If you often make voice calls, then you should enjoy the Qualcomm CVC (clear voice capture) technology. This model is water-resistant, so it protects from rain or sweat, but they were designed more for performance than workouts.


Jaybird Run XT + Slanted

If you’re a runner, then Jaybird is the company for you. The Jaybird RUNXT offer a low-profile and secure fit, and an IPX7 waterproof rating that the company calls “Earth Proof.” The Jaybird RUNXT offers 12hrs of playtime with the charging case, and the company stated that five minutes of charging provides 1hr of play time.

The RunXT were designed for runners, and the earbuds are some of the lightest on the market. You’ll find three sizes of ear gels to choose from, and the Jaybird app allows you fully customize your EQ. You can also use the “Find my Bud” feature, which allows you to keep track of your wireless earbuds through the Jaybird app if you misplaced one.
