Amazon and Google are competing to be your smart speaker of choice this holiday season. Both options have been bestsellers over the last few holidays, and they have become easier to use, and more helpful, over the years. Amazon has several models, all of which can play music and podcasts with Alexa built-in, and Google is promoting the company’s Google Home, Google Home Mini, and the Google Home Max. All of these smart speakers work with outside platforms to play music and podcasts, so you can connect your Spotify, Stitcher, and Pandora accounts to listen to your playlists and enjoy your libraries. Most third-party systems, like Tile and smart light bulbs, work with Alexa and Google Assistant, so the choice is yours to make.
If you already have Alexa, or if you’re looking to start using Amazon’s voice assistant, you can read our Echo Buying Guide to choose the best Echo for your space. Amazon is already offering discounts on most of the company’s Echo models, and you can save a lot of money buying directly from Amazon. The Echo (gen 3) is going to be $40 off this year for $59, and you can upgrade to the Echo Plus for just $99 for a limited time. The Echo Dot (gen 3) is also getting a big price cut this year, and Amazon will be offering the smart speaker for $22. If you want the special Echo Dot with Clock, that model is also going on sale for $34.99. You can compare the current models and promotions right here on the company’s Echo page.
If you would like to expand or adopt the Google Assistant, you should shop at Walmart. The retailer will offer the Google Home for $79, down from $100, for the holidays. Staples is also running a promo on Black Friday that will get you the speaker for $49, while supplies last. The smaller Google Home Mini is on sale for $25 at Target, but the official Google Store is running the same promotion. The Google Store is also offering $50 off the Google Home Max, and you can pick that up for a limited time for just $249.
If those options don’t work for you, there’s also Sonos. The company is offering a limited promotion between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday for the Sonos One. You can save up to $100 if you shop over the holiday weekend, which is welcomed because Sonos is the most expensive option. We should mention that the Sonos One can be controlled with Google Assistant, Alexa, and Apple AirPlay, so it doesn’t matter which one you prefer.
