The long-awaited Black Adam movie finally has a release date. Dwayne Johnson announced that the movie will hit theaters on December 22, 2021, which has the film competiting some heavy hitters. Dwayne Johnson stars in the movie as the titular character, who started out as a villain and nemesis of Shazam in the DC world, but the character became more of an antihero in more recent comics. Fans have known for almost a decade that the Dwayne Johnson Black Adam movie was on the way, but now they have a release date.

While it’s still two years away, the box office is packed with big releases in December 2021. Disney is starting off the month with “Avatar 2,” which could split the box office during Black Adam’s opening weekend. James Cameron is returning to the Avatar franchise after a ten-year hiatus, and the movie is bringing back Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington. “Black Adam” opens the following week against “Hotel Transylvania 4” and the “Wicked” movie adaptation. Any of these movies could be shuffled around over the next few years, but December is already shaping up to be a standoff.

Jaume Collet-Serra is currently scheduled to direct “Black Adam,” but the studio hasn’t released any additional casting information at this time. In his Instagram announcement, Johnson wrote, “I’m honored to join the iconic #DCUniverse and it’s a true pleasure to become, BLACK ADAM.” He added, “BLACK ADAM is blessed by magic with the powers equal to SUPERMAN, but the difference is he doesn’t toe the mark or walk the line. He’s a rebellious, one of a kind superhero, who’ll always do what’s right for the people – but he does it his way. Truth and justice – the BLACK ADAM way.”

Since Black Adam and Shazam are so closely connected (you might have noticed by the costume), fans thought that Black Adam would make a big appearance in “Shazam!” earlier this year. Now fans will have to wonder if Shazam appears in the “Black Adam” movie. It would make sense to connect the two, since “Shazam!” did so well in theaters. The meeting of Shazam and Black Adam could end up being the big post-credit scene, setting up the next movie. The “Shazam!” movie had a $53M domestic opening earlier this year and went on to make over $364.5M worldwide. David F. Sandberg directed “Shazam!” for the studio, and Zachary Levi played the titular character.
