Blumhouse’s highly anticipated “Fantasy Island” movie now has first look trailer. The new film is a dark take on the popular TV series that ran from 1977 to 1984, showcasing an island where Mr. Roarke makes the secret dreams of his guests come true at a luxurious but remote tropical resort. The studio teased the movie adaptation on social media adding, “But when the fantasies turn into nightmares, the guests have to solve the island’s mystery in order to escape with their lives.”

Jeff Wadlow directed the movie for the studio, working off a script by Wadlow, Chris Roach, and Jillian Jacobs. The project was produced by Jason Blum and Marc Toberoff, and stars Michael Peña, Maggie Q, Lucy Hale, Austin Stowell, Portia Doubleday, Jimmy O. Yang, Ryan Hansen, and Michael Rooker. Gene Levitt created the original television series, and Jeff Wadlow, Couper Samuelson, and Jeanette Volturno served as executive producers on the movie.

The film is scheduled to release in theaters on Valentine’s Day weekend, opening against “The King’s Man” prequel, “What About Love” with Sharon Stone and Andy Garcia, “Sonic the Hedgehog,” and Liam Neeson’s “Ordinary Love.” Not only is the box office overstuffed that weekend, these releases are only one week after “Birds of Prey” and the horror-thriller “The Lodge” with Richard Armitage, Alicia Silverstone, Jaeden Martell, and Riley Keough. The week after “Fantasy Island” hits theaters is the release date for Katie Holmes’ “Brahms: The Boy II,” Vin Diesel’s “Bloodshot,” and the animated adaptation of “Call of the Wild.” With almost a dozen new releases to choose from in just three weeks, it will be interesting to see which of the movies tops the charts. Valentine’s Day weekend can be hit or miss for both movies and theaters. The big 2019 release was “Alita: Battle Angel,” which only made $28.5M on opening weekend, but “Fifty Shades of Grey” made $85M in 2015.

Universal Pictures is releasing “The Invisible Man” with Elisabeth Moss, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Aldis Hodge, and Storm Reid on February 28th. So fans of horror-thrillers will have several movies to check out during the cold month.
