Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid Live!” was an instant hit for ABC last night. The show landed as the Highest-Rated TV Musical in Nearly 4 Years, and helped the network top the charts on Tuesday night. The special event aired on ABC at 8:00 p.m and served as the lead-in to “Emergence,” which saw a significant boost thanks to the musical. The network finished the night as number-one in Adults 18-49, beating NBC by 82% in the demo. Scoring season highs on the night, ABC delivered its strongest Tuesday night with entertainment programming since March 2018, and that’s in both Total Viewers (7.1M according to the network) and Adults 18-49. “The Little Mermaid Live!” is now the top-rated entertainment telecast on any network since the May series finale of CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory,” which aired earlier this on May 16th. The show crushed its competition in the same demo, taking down NBC’s “The Voice” and the ever-popular “This Is Us” drama.
The show was also a hit on social-media, though some people were just talking about Flounder and Shaggy’s suit. “The Little Mermaid Live!” was Tuesday’s top most social entertainment telecast across broadcast and cable, earning 716K social interactions across Instagram (43%), Twitter (43%) and Facebook (14%). Auli’i Cravalho starred as Ariel in the live studio production, with Oscar-nominated, and GRAMMY, Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning artist Queen Latifah playing the role of Ursula. GRAMMY-winning artist Shaggy voiced Sebastian, and John Stamos took the role of the chef that tried to cook him.
As a lead-in for “Emergence,” the Little Mermaid helped the drama shoot up over the prior week by 35% in Total Viewers (3.5M) and “Emergence” found its largest audience in 5 weeks. The show jumped up 40% in Adults 18-49. Through the first 5 weeks of the season, ABC’s “Emergence” is the top gainer on the broadcast networks in Total Viewers, soaring by +108% over its L+SD average after 7 days of TV playback on average.
