The Kindle is the gold standard in eReaders, and Amazon has three basic options to choose from in 2019. The company has upgraded all three models over the past year and added fan-requested features like front lights and waterproofing on a few of them. If you haven’t upgraded your Kindle in a few years, now is a great time, and all three models are better than ever.
The Kindle: $89 at Amazon
The standard Kindle comes in either black or white. The newest version now comes with an adjustable front light, so you can read indoors and outdoors, in darkness or at the park. The Kindle features a 6″ 167 ppi glare-free touchscreen display, and unlike other tablets, you can use this one in direct sunlight. The Kindle now works with Bluetooth, so you can use your favorite headphones and listen to an audiobook whenever you like. The battery life on the Kindle is designed for weeks, not just hours, so your Kindle will be ready when you need it. This model was designed for one-handed use, and the entire device is only 4.5″ wide and only weighs 6.1 oz. With 4GB (2.8 available) internal storage, you will be able to carry thousands of books in your bag. You also get free cloud storage for all of your Amazon content, so you can stash everything you could ever want to read in the cloud and save it for a rainy day. The standard Kindle is the least expensive option on the list, but other than a few design features, it does everything that the other models do.
The Kindle Paperwhite: $129 at Amazon
The Kindle Paperwhite is the most popular Kindle on the market. It does everything that the regular Kindle can do, but it comes in both an 8 GB and a 32 GB model. The screen has 5 LEDs for brightness, instead of the standard 4 LEDs found on the basic Kindle model. The screen on the Paperwhite is the same size as the basic Kindle, coming in at 6″, but the resolution on the Paperwhite is rated at 300 ppi, and that’s almost double when compared to the standard model. The Kindle Paperwhite comes in black or twilight blue, and other than the screen, the most prominent feature is that this model is waterproof. The waterproofing feature is the big selling point since it was a user-requested feature for years. Now you can read by the pool or in the bath and not worry about wet hands or splashes. Just like the regular Kindle, you can pair Bluetooth headphones, and the battery lasts for weeks with normal use. A bonus with the Paperwhite is that it uses Wi-Fi and Cellular Connectivity, but don’t worry, Amazon pays for the cellular connectivity when you want another book from Amazon’s store. The Paperwhite is 6.6″ wide, so you can still read it with one hand, and it is only .3″ thick. The whole device only weighs 6.4oz.
The Kindle Oasis: $249 at Amazon
The Kindle Oasis is the luxury sedan of eReaders. You have two colors to choose from, Champagne Gold and Graphite, and it’s the most expensive Kindle of the three models. You get a lot for the extra money, but at $249, we suggest giving this to a student that might use it for downloading textbooks, or someone that really loves to read. The Kindle Oasis features a larger 7″ 300ppi screen, and while the Kindle Paperwhite has 5 LEDs, the Kindle Oasis has 25 LEDs. Just like the Paperwhite, the Oasis has an 8 GB and 32 GB options, and the Oasis also supports Bluetooth pairing and free Cellular Connectivity. The Kindle Oasis is also waterproof, but it has a lot of unique features that the other models don’t offer. The Oasis features an adjustable warm light and an auto-adjusting light sensor. The Oasis also has a unique design, featuring a page-turn button on the side of the device, right where your thumb is. The aluminum body keeps things light, and despite having a larger frame at 6.4″, the Kindle Oasis only weighs 6.6oz.
For the younger readers, you really can’t go wrong with the standard Kindle. They are relatively inexpensive and they offer all the same basic features as the high-end model. The Kindle Paperwhite is the least expensive model to feature waterproofing, and the Kindle Oasis offers the best screen and the unique page-turn button. The Kindle line has been the leader in the eReader space since its debut, and while other brands have tried to copy it, no one makes an eReader better than Amazon. All three models offer Bluetooth, they work at night and in direct sunlight, and each have week-long battery life. Since all three models offer unlimited cloud storage for Amazon content, all you have to decide is if you want waterproofing, and which screen you prefer.
