Sony Pictures set a premiere date for the “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” sequel. The second installment in the award-winning franchise is expected to release in theaters on April 8, 2022. The original film was an overnight hit for the studio, bringing in over $35.3M on its opening weekend and grossing over $375.5M worldwide. The movie won the Academy Award for animated feature at the 2019 Oscars, beating out “Wreck it Ralph 2,” “The Incredibles 2,” “Dogs,” and “Mirai.” The movie also won Best Motion Picture – Animated at the Golden Globes, a BAFTA for Best Animated Feature Film, and an AAFCA Award for Best Animated Feature. The film also took home seven Annie Awards that year.

Bob Persichetti and Peter Ramsey directed the original animated-comedy for Sony, and the film features the voice talents of Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Lily Tomlin, and Zoe Kravitz. The story introduced Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one hero can wear the mask and protect the citizens of New York City.

April 2022 is pretty far off, and the only other major release with a title and date around that time is Marvel’s “Black Panther 2” on May 6th. After some back and forth behind the scenes, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man character is returning for a third installment in Sony’s franchise, and one last Marvel movie. A last-minute deal between Marvel and Sony Pictures kept the Spider-Man character in the Marvel universe for two more films. Rumors circulated that it was Tom Holland himself that reached out to Disney CEO Bob Iger and Sony film chairman Tom Rothman to finalize the deal. Sony Pictures hasn’t released any casting information for the new Spider-Verse installment, but more information will be released when the film starts production.
