The creators of “Game of Thrones” are no longer working with LucasFilm to create a new Star Wars trilogy. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the two creators of HBO’s award-winning fantasy series, have departed the project and will no longer be the driving force behind the next three movies.
Disney hasn’t released a statement on the departure, but Weiss and Benioff released a joint statement saying, “We love Star Wars. When George Lucas built it, he built it for us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything.”
The new trilogy was announced back in February, and they are expected to be the first three movies in the franchise not to include the original cast or center around the Skywalker saga. The Skywalker story is expected to end with “Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker,” which is releasing on December 20th.
The David Benioff and D.B. Weiss trilogy isn’t the only trilogy on the table. Rian Johnson, the writer and director of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” is also working on a separate trilogy for the franchise. Both sets of movies are still in the early development phase, and no details have been shared at this time. Keep in mind that the new head of everything Marvel, Kevin Feige, is also working on a “Star Wars” film with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. That’s 7 possible Star Wars films on the schedule, and it seems unlikely that all 7 would go into production any time soon. Over the next few years more projects will be added and removed, and fans will have to wait and see which make it to the big screen.
Outside of the theatrical releases, Disney is gearing up for the launch of the live-action series “The Mandalorian” on Disney+ in November. Disney+ will also be the home of an exclusive new season of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” and an untitled Cassian Andor series starring Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk. Disney also confirmed an Obi-Wan Kenobi series for the platform, with Ewan McGregor reprising his role from the prequels.
