Sony Pictures released an official trailer for the upcoming “The Grudge” reboot, scheduled to hit theaters on January 3rd. Nicolas Pesce directed the movie for the studio, which stars Andrea Riseborough, Demián Bichir, John Cho, Betty Gilpin, Lin Shaye, and Jacki Weaver. Like the previous films in the franchise, the reboot is based on the film “Ju-On: The Grudge” written and directed by Takashi Shimizu. This adaptation was produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Taka Ichise.

The 2014 version featured Sarah Michelle Gellar, and the movie opened at the top of the box office with a $39.1M debut before grossing over $187.2M worldwide. “The Grudge 2” released in 2006 and featured Amber Tamblyn, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Sarah Roemer, and Teresa Palmer. The sequel failed to top the original and made $20.8M on its opening weekend before grossing $70.7M worldwide.

Nathan Kahane, Erin Westerman, Brady Fujikawa, Andrew Pfeffer, Roy Lee, Doug Davison, John Powers Middleton, and Schuyler Weiss served as executive producers on the new reboot.

The winter months have become a favorite playground for the horror-thriller genre. The other big releases planned for January include Kristen Stewart’s thriller “Underwater;” “Bad Boys for Life” with Will Smith, Kate del Castillo, Vanessa Hudgens, and Alexander Ludwig; “Dolittle” with Tom Holland, Robert Downey Jr., Michael Sheen, and Rami Malek; Matthew McConaughey and Charlie Hunnam’s “The Gentleman;” “The Turning” with Mackenzie Davis and Finn Wolfhard; “Gretel & Hansel” with Sophia Lillis; and “The Rhythm Section” with Blake Lively and Jude Law.

With almost a dozen horror and thriller movies on the schedule, it will be interesting to see which of the films tops the January charts. The next big release in the genre is “Doctor Sleep,” with Rebecca Ferguson, Ewan McGregor, Carel Struycken, and Jacob Tremblay. That film is a continuation of Stephen King’s “The Shining” horror classic and is scheduled to hit theaters on November 8th.
