The October box office brought us a battle of the sequels this weekend as Disney’s “Maleficent 2” opened against “Zombieland 2” from Sony Pictures. The specialty box office also had an interesting match-up this week, as Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit” opened against Robert Pattinson’s “The Lighthouse.”
Disney’s “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” won the box office crown with a $36M opening this week. Robert Stromberg directed the original “Maleficent” back in 2014, and the movie helped launch the live-action franchise for Disney. The movie made $69.4M on its opening weekend in May and went on to gross over $758.5M for the studio. Joachim Rønning directed “Maleficent 2,” which stars Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, Lesley Manville, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Skrein, Harris Dickinson, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
“Joker” fell to second-place on the domestic charts, bringing in $29.2M across 4,090 locations. Now in its third week in theaters, the movie has made over $247.2M domestically. Todd Phillips directed “Joker,” which stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, and Zazie Beetz. The success of “Joker” split the box office with “Zombieland 2: Double Tap,” which debuted in third-place overall with a $26.7M opening. The original “Zombieland” hit theaters in October 2009 and made $24.7M on its opening weekend before making $102.3M worldwide. Ruben Fleischer returned to the franchise to direct “Zombieland 2,” and the sequel features Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin, Rosario Dawson, Zoey Deutch, and Luke Wilson.
The animated-comedy “The Addams Family” dropped to fourth-place overall, bringing in $16M across 4,102 locations. After two weeks, the movie has a $56.8M domestic total. Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon directed “The Addams Family,” and the film features the voice talents of Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloë Grace Moretz, Finn Wolfhard, Nick Kroll, Snoop Dogg, Bette Midler, Allison Janney, Martin Short, Catherine O’Hara, Tituss Burgess, Jenifer Lewis, and Elsie Fisher.Paramount Pictures’ “Gemini Man” landed in fifth-place overall this week with an $8.5M total. The film has a two week domestic total of $36.5M. Ang Lee directed “Gemini Man,” which stars Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Clive Owen.
At the specialty box office, “The Lighthouse” edged out “Jojo Rabbit,” but “Jojo Rabbit” had the higher average. A24’s “The Lighthouse” opened in 8 locations and made $419.7K for a $52,471 theater average. “Jojo Rabbit” made $350K across 5 locations for an average of $70K. Taika Waititi directed the “Jojo Rabbit” adaptation, which stars Roman Griffin Davis, Thomasin McKenzie, and Scarlett Johansson. Robert Eggers directed “The Lighthouse,” and the movie stars Willem Dafoe, and Robert Pattinson.
Next week, moviegoers can see the action-thriller “Black and Blue” with Mike Colter, Naomie Harris, and Frank Grillo, and the horror-thriller “Countdown” with Anne Winters, Elizabeth Lail, and Charlie McDermott.
