Several major releases hit the box office this weekend, offering moviegoers a choice in animation, action, comedy, and horror. The national releases this week were “The Addams Family,” “Gemini Man,” and “Jexi,” and “Parasite” opened at three locations domestically. Disney returns to the schedule next week, and “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” will open against “Zombieland 2: Double Tap.”

The new releases weren’t enough to top Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Joker,” and the DC installment had a $55M weekend. Now in its second week in theaters, the movie has made over $192M domestically for the studio. Todd Phillips directed “Joker,” which stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, and Zazie Beetz. “The Addams Family” was the top new release this weekend, and the animated-comedy scared up $30.2M across 4,007 locations. Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon directed “The Addams Family,” and the film features the voice talents of Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloë Grace Moretz, Finn Wolfhard, Nick Kroll, Snoop Dogg, Bette Midler, Allison Janney, Martin Short, Catherine O’Hara, Tituss Burgess, Jenifer Lewis, and Elsie Fisher. “Gemini Man” was a distant third, bringing in $20.5M across 3,642 locations. Ang Lee directed “Gemini Man,” which stars Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Clive Owen.

Universal Pictures’ “Abominable” dropped to fourth-place overall on the domestic charts with a $6.1M weekend. The animated-comedy hit theaters three weeks ago, and has made over $47.9M domestically. Jill Culton and Todd Wilderman directed “Abominable,” which features the voice talents of Chloe Bennet, Albert Tsai, Tenzing Norgay Trainor, Sarah Paulson, and Eddie Izzard. “Downton Abbey” landed in fifth-place on the charts with a $4.9M weekend, raising the film’s four week domestic total to just over $82.6M. Michael Engler directed “Downton Abbey,” which features Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, Maggie Smith, and Hugh Bonneville.

Not making the top five but worth mentioning is this week’s other new release, the comedy “Jexi” from Lionsgate. The comedy made $3.1M across 2,332 locations. Jon Lucas and Scott Moore directed “Jexi,” which features Adam Devine, Alexander Shipp, and Rose Byrne. The dark horror-comedy “Parasite” had a great opening weekend, even though it was at the limited box office. “Parasite” opened in three locations and made over $376.2K, giving the film the highest theater average of the week. Joon-ho Bong directed “Parasite,” which stars Kang-ho Song, Yeo-jeong Jo, and So-dam Park.

The big releases next weekend are “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and “Zombieland 2: Double Tap,” but those aren’t your only options. The specialty box office has two highly anticipated films, and you should check your local listings to see if they are playing in your area. The two movies to watch for are Taika Waititi’s “JoJo Rabbit,” and “The Lighthouse” with Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe.
