Universal Pictures released a trailer for the horror-thriller “The Turning,” which is scheduled to premiere in theaters on January 24th. The studio released the video on social media, telling horror fans, “Keeping the lights on won’t keep you safe.”
Floria Sigismondi directed the movie, which stars Mackenzie Davis, Finn Wolfhard, Joely Richardson, and Brooklynn Prince. The official description reads, “The Turning takes us to a mysterious estate in the Maine countryside, where newly appointed nanny Kate is charged with the care of two disturbed orphans, Flora and Miles. Quickly though, she discovers that both the children and the house are harboring dark secrets and things may not be as they appear.”
The movie is inspired by Henry James’ novel The Turn of the Screw, and the adaptation is from Chad and Carey Hayes (The Conjuring). Scott Bernstein and Roy Lee produced the film. If you like to read the original work before seeing the adaptation, you can find the novel right here on Amazon.
Horror-thrillers are popular in January, when we are all locked away inside our dark and chilly homes. Sony Pictures’ “The Grudge” reboot starts the month off on January 3rd, opening against an untitled Blumhouse project. Kristen Stewart’s “Underwater” action-thriller opens the following week, and “The Turning” will open against Sarah Paulson’s thriller “Run.” The following week is another set of thrillers with “Gretel & Hansel” opening against “The Rhythm Section” action-thriller starring Blake Lively and Jude Law.
The other big releases set to debut in January include the comedy “Like a Boss” with Tiffany Haddish, Dave Bautista’s “My Spy,” “Bad Boys for Life,” “The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle” with Robert Downey, Jr., and Guy Ritchie’s “The Gentleman” with Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Michelle Dockery, Colin Farrell, Henry Golding, and Hugh Grant.
It will be interesting to see which of the thrillers scares up the biggest box office opening during the month and if the horror genre outshines the comedies during the dreary month.
