Disney is celebrating the 30th anniversary of “The Little Mermaid” with a special live musical event. ABC first announced the special over the summer, and the network released a quick teaser of the cast on Sunday night to get fans excited for the presentation.
“The Little Mermaid Live” will take viewers back under the sea, and it will include all of the original characters. The live-event will be interwoven into the broadcast of the original feature film, creating a new hybrid format. The presentation will feature music from the original animated film and the Tony Award-winning Broadway stage version, originally composed by eight-time Oscar-winning composer, Alan Menken. Howard Ashman’s iconic film lyrics will also be showcased, while lyricist for the Broadway adaptation, Glenn Slater, will contribute to the event.
Auli’i Cravalho is playing Ariel, and Oscar-nominated, and Grammy, Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning R&B artist, actor, and producer Queen Latifah is playing Ursula. Grammy-winning artist Shaggy will voice Sebastian, in the musical.
“The Wonderful World of Disney presents The Little Mermaid Live!” is produced by Done+Dusted. Executive producers include Done+Dusted’s Hamish Hamilton, who will also direct, Katy Mullan, David Jammy, Raj Kapoor and Ian Stewart. Also executive producing is Richard Kraft, producer and director of the acclaimed Hollywood Bowl productions of “The Little Mermaid” and “Beauty and the Beast.”
“The Little Mermaid Live” is scheduled to air at 8pm EST on November 5th. The teaser trailer that Disney released on Sunday showcases Auli’i Cravalho, Queen Latifah, Shaggy, John Stamos, and Graham Phillips. You only get a quick peek at the makeup and costumes, but if you’re a Little Mermaid fan, that’s probably enough to get you excited for the big premiere later this fall.
