Sony Pictures and Marvel are working things out, and Spider-Man will get to stay in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for another movie. Marvel and Sony are the Ross and Rachel of movie studios, always calling things off, then quickly making up when the fans react badly. On Friday afternoon, the two companies confirmed that Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige will produce the third film in the “Spider-Man: Homecoming” series, and that the movie will feature Tom Holland as Spider-Man. The deal gives Sony one more adventure, and Marvel one more adventure, and two films left for Tom Holland’s contract.

News of the Spider-Man split was announced back in August, and fans learned that Marvel and Sony Pictures would go their separate. The separation meant that Spider-Man wouldn’t be allowed to play with his Marvel friends anymore, and will most likely be doomed to fighting Dr. Octopus and the Green Goblin again. That won’t happen, or at least it’s not likely to happen any time soon, because Spider-Man will be invited to battle with other Marvel creations for at least one more film. The final Marvel/Sony film in the trilogy will release on July 16, 2021, and Amy Pascal is producing again.

“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it,” Feige said in a statement on Friday. “Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”

Pascal added, “Peter Parker’s story took a dramatic turn in ‘Far From Home’ and I could not be happier we will all be working together as we see where his journey goes.”

“We have had a great collaboration over the last four years, and our mutual desire to continue was equal to that of the many fans,” said Robert Lawson, chief communications officer for Sony Pictures Entertainment. “We are delighted to be moving forward together.”
