Sony Pictures released a teaser for “The Grudge,” a reboot of the popular horror-thriller franchise set to hit theaters in 2020. Nicolas Pesce directed the movie for the studio, which stars Betty Gilpin, Andrea Riseborough, William Sadler, Demi├ín Bichir, Lin Shaye, Tara Westwood, and Joel Marsh Garland. The studio hasn’t released a trailer for the movie yet but seems eager to remind fans that a new installment is releasing in the new year.

Sarah Michelle Gellar starred in the 2004 version of “The Grudge,” which opened at the top of the box office with a $39.1M debut before grossing over $187.2M worldwide. “The Grudge 2” released in 2006 and featured Amber Tamblyn, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Sarah Roemer, and Teresa Palmer. The sequel failed to top the original, and made $20.8M on its opening weekend before grossing $70.7M worldwide.

Sony Pictures will most likely have a trailer ready for “The Grudge” before Halloween, just as horror-thriller fans around the country settle in to watch their movie marathons. In “The Grudge,” anyone that enters a cursed house is haunted by vengeful ghosts.

January has become a popular month for horror-thrillers, and “The Grudge” is scheduled to open against an untitled Blumhouse project. We still have a few more months before the release date, and one of those films may reschedule their premiere date to avoid a clash at the box office. Kristen Stewart’s thriller “Underwater” also opens in January, and that film features Stewart, Vincent Cassel, John Gallagher Jr., and TJ Miller. The other big thrillers and horror releases currently scheduled throughout the month include Sarah Paulson’s “RUN,” “The Turning,” Sophia Lillis’ “Gretel & Hansel,” and the Blake Lively and Jude Law action-thriller “The Rhythm Section.”
