Paramount Pictures dropped a first-look trailer for “The Rhythm Section,” a new thriller coming to theaters this winter with Blake Lively, Jude Law, and Sterling K. Brown. The movie was directed by Reed Morano, and is scheduled to release in theaters on January 31st.
In the movie, Blake Lively stars as Stephanie Patrick, an ordinary woman on a path of self-destruction after her family is tragically killed in a plane crash. When Stephanie discovers that the crash was not an accident, she enters a dark, complex world to seek revenge on those responsible and find her own redemption. The movie is based on the novel by Mark Burnell, and you can read the original work before seeing the adaption right here on Amazon.
“The Rhythm Section” is opening against the horror-thriller “Gretel & Hansel,” starring Sophia Lillis, Alice Krige, and Jessica De Gouw, and directed by Oz Perkins. The release date sandwiches the thriller between two very crowded weekends at the box office. The week before “The Rhythm Section’s” debut is the release of Guy Ritchie’s “The Gentlemen” with Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Michelle Dockery, Colin Farrell, Henry Golding, and Hugh Grant; Sarah Paulson’s thriller “Run;” and the thriller “The Turning.” The week after “The Rhythm Section” hits theaters is the big release of Margot Robbie’s “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).” That’s also the same weekend that Sony Pictures’ “Peter Rabbit 2” launches in theaters nationwide.
Fans of Blake Lively will also see her in the upcoming crime mystery-drama “The Husband’s Secret,” starring as Cecilia Fitzpatrick. That movie is based on the Liane Moriarty novel, with a screenplay written by Pamela Gray.
Even with the packed box office, Blake Lively and Jude Law should be able to draw a crowd. It will be interesting to see which of the many thrillers releasing in January wins the month, and awards season starts to heat up.
