Warner Bros. Pictures announced that production has started on New Line Cinema’s new “Mortal Kombat” movie. Simon McQuoid is directing the film, which is scheduled to release in theaters in 2021. The movie is based on the popular video game franchise, which recently released its latest installment, “Mortal Kombat 11,” across multiple platforms. The film will serve as a reboot of the franchise, which was first adapted into a movie in 1995. A sequel to the film was released in 1997, but it failed to top the original’s box office draw.
The studio also confirmed the extended cast, which includes Joe Taslim as Sub Zero; Ludi Lin as Liu Kang; Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade; Josh Lawson as Kano; Tadanobu Asano as Raiden; Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Bridges; Chin Han as Shang Tsung; Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion; Max Huang as Kung Lao; Sisi Stringer as Mileena; and Lewis Tan.
James Wan and Todd Garner are producing the movie, and Greg Russo wrote the screenplay. Larry Kasanoff, E. Bennett Walsh, Michael Clear, and Jeremy Stein are serving as executive producers on the project. Other notable roles include Germain McMicking as the film’s director of photography, production designer Naaman Marshall, editor Scott Gray, and costume designer Cappi Ireland. According to the studio, production will shoot throughout South Australia.
The original “Mortal Kombat” movie launched into theaters at the top of the box office, bringing in over $23M on its opening weekend before grossing over $122M worldwide. Paul W.S. Anderson directed the sequel in 1997, and that film also won its opening weekend with a $16.7M debut and grossed over $51M globally. Fans of the franchise have a long wait to see “Mortal Kombat” return to the big screen, and the movie is set for release on March 5, 2021. “Mortal Kombat” will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
