While the summer box office had its ups and downs, theater companies tried everything they could to pull viewers away from their streaming devices and into a dark, chilly, theater. CJ 4DPLEX, one of the leading suppliers of the multi-sensory 4DX format, drew in a record-breaking 2.7M viewers in the month of August, setting a new record in the history of the company.

There were plenty of options for 4DX viewing this year, but the top three performing films for August were “Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw”, “The Lion King” and “Aladdin”. The company also confirmed that local films “The Bravest” and “One Piece: Stampede” performed strong in China and Japan, which contributed to the overall 4DX box office record.

American audiences certainly helped drive up sales this summer, but 4DX’s growth in August is mostly influenced by Europe. In particular, attendance rates increased by 224% in Austria, 144% in the Netherlands, and 136% in Belgium. These countries join France and the UK as the leading 4DX markets in Europe. As for the United States, the country has set the record for the highest monthly audience for the past five consecutive months. The audience figures in Australia and India have increased by 375% and 89% respectively, when compared to August last year.

Diving deeper into the stats, the largest share of the 4DX global audience in August was 27.7% in China, followed by Europe with 22.6%, Japan 13.1%, Korea 13% and Mexico 4.3%. The 4DX footprint has also grown with 4DX auditoriums opening across the U.S., Canada, UK, Nigeria, China, and Mongolia, and ScreenX is opening in China with CGV Cinemas.

In our recap of the Summer Box office in September, we noted the several failures that moviegoers decided not to watch this year. While films like “Uglydolls” and “Dark Phoenix” stumbled out of the gate, the three 4DX films mentioned earlier all did well domestically.
