STX Entertainment released a first look trailer for “Countdown,” the studio’s upcoming thriller scheduled to release in theaters on October 25th. Justin Dec wrote and directed the movie, which stars Elizabeth Lail, Peter Facinelli, Anne Winters, and Charlie McDermott. October is the perfect month for thrillers, but “Countdown” will have to fight its way to the top of the box office.
In the movie, a young nurse (Elizabeth Lail) downloads an app that claims to predict exactly when a person is going to die. After she uses the app, it tells her she only has three days left to live. The studio teases the film adding, “With time ticking away and death closing in, she must find a way to save her life before time runs out.”
“Countdown” is releasing just a few days before Halloween, hoping to get a boost from the haunted holiday. The thriller is going up against some heavy hitters this year, but films like “Happy Death Day” have proven that low-budget horror-thrillers can quickly become box office favorites around Halloween. The big competition for “Countdown” is the previous week’s releases, which include “Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and “Zombieland 2: Double Tap.” Either of those films could split the box office in their follow-up weekends, which would spell trouble for “Countdown.”
“Countdown” is also opening against “Black and Blue” with Naomie Harris and Frank Grillo, Benedict Cumberbatch’s “The Current War,” and Sebastian Stan’s war-drama “The Last Full Measure.” All of these films have big names attached, so it will be interesting to see which of the four releases takes the top spot over the weekend. October has several other big releases on the scheduled this year. The month begins with the highly-anticipated release of “Joker” on November 4th, followed by the animated-comedy “The Addams Family,” “Gemini Man,” and the comedy “Jexi” on November 11th.
