Universal Pictures shared a trailer for “Black Christmas,” a new horror-thriller coming to theaters this winter. Directed by Sophia Taka, the movie stars Imogen Poots, Aleyse Shannon, Lily Donoghue, Brittany O’Grady, Caleb Eberhardt, Simon Mead, and Cary Elwes. The remake is skipping over Halloween and headed right for December, adding a little horror to the box office schedule.

The story takes place at Hawthorne College, which is getting ready for its holiday break. When Riley Stone (Imogen Poots) and her Mu Kappa Epsilon sisters – athlete Marty (Lily Donoghue), rebel Kris (Aleyse Shannon), and foodie Jesse (Brittany O’Grady) – prepare to celebrate the break with a week of parties, a black-masked stalker begins killing sorority women one by one.

The studio described the movie adding, “As the body count rises, Riley and her squad start to question whether they can trust any man, including Marty’s beta-male boyfriend, Nate, Riley’s new crush Landon, or even esteemed classics instructor Professor Gelson.” The movie gets a special release date in December, Friday the 13th.

Sophia Takal directed the movie from a script she wrote with April Wolfe. The horror-thriller is a new take on the 1974 slasher classic produced by Jason Blum, Ben Cosgrove, and Adam Hendricks. Couper Samuelson and Jeanette Volturno serve as the executive producers with Greg Gilreath and Zac Locke.

December is a busy month at the box office and “Black Christmas” is opening against Sony Pictures’ “Jumanji: The Next Level,” with Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Karen Gillan, Danny DeVito, Danny Glover, and Awkwafina. The following week is going to be even harder on “Black Christmas,” with the drama “Bombshell,” the musical “CATS,” “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” and “Superintelligence” opening in theaters nationwide. It’s going to be a busy month, but fans of the genre should be happy to see a horror-thriller pop up during the usually glossy holiday schedule.
