Netflix confirmed the cast for “Awake,” a new drama expected to release in 2020. Mark Raso is directing the movie, which stars Gina Rodriguez, Ariana Greenblatt, Frances Fisher, Shamier Anderson, Finn Jones, Lucius Hoyos, Gil Bellows, Barry Pepper, and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

The film’s official synopsis reads, “After a sudden global event wipes out all electronics and takes away humankind’s ability to sleep, chaos quickly begins to consume the world. Only Jill, an ex-soldier with a troubled past, may hold the key to a cure in the form of her own daughter. The question is, can Jill safely deliver her daughter and save the world before she herself loses her mind?”

Principal photography on the movie started in Toronto this month, with Greg Poirier, Joseph Raso, and Mark Raso writing the script. Paul Schiff is serving as producer on the project, with Mark Gordon, Josh Phillips, Matt Jackson, Greg Poirier, Mark Raso, Joseph Raso, Gina Rodriguez, and Whitney Brown attached as executive producers. Joanne Lee is serving as co-producer.

Gina Rodriguez is also starring in a live-action “Carmen Sandiego” adaption for Netflix, playing the iconic character in the red hat. She is also voicing the role of Velma Dinkley in the animated “Scoob” movie based on the Scooby-Doo franchise. That project also features the voice talents of Mark Wahlberg, Zac Efron, Amanda Seyfried, Mckenna Grace, Jason Isaacs, Will Forte, Ken Jeong, Ariana Greenblatt, and Tracy Morgan.

Fans of Jennifer Jason Leigh can see her in “Possessor,” a new sci-fi thriller from writer and director Brandon Cronenberg. That movie is expected to debut in 2020 as well, and also stars Tuppence Middleton, Sean Bean, Christopher Abbott, Andrea Riseborough, Kaniehtiio Horn, Hanneke Talbot, Christopher Jacot, and Deragh Campbell.

Netflix didn’t announce a premiere date for “Awake,” but we shouldn’t have to wait too long for a trailer now that the film is already in production.
