Osgood Perkins’ “Gretel & Hansel” thriller will release in theaters on January 31st. Orion Pictures confirmed the release date for the movie on Monday, which stars Sophia Lillis, Sammy Leakey, Charles Babalola, Alice Krige, and Jessica De Gouw. Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Fred Berger produced the movie, with Sandra Yee Ling and Macdara Kellehe serving as executive producers.
The studio’s official description reads, “A long time ago in a distant fairytale countryside, a young girl (Sophia Lillis, It) leads her little brother (Sammy Leakey) into a dark wood in desperate search of food and work, only to stumble upon a nexus of terrifying evil.”
Osgood Perkins also directed “The Blackcoat’s Daughter,” and “I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House,” which featured Alice Krige, Jessica De Gouw, and Charles Babalola. Rob Hayes wrote the movie, and the film is opening in a very popular month for the genre.
The film’s January 31st release has it opening against the thriller “The Rhythm Section.” Paramount Pictures recently moved the film to January 31st, and the movie stars Blake Lively and Jude Law. The other big thrillers already scheduled to release that month include “The Grudge” from Sony Pictures, and an untitled Blumhouse project. January is also the month that “Underwater” with Kristen Stewart hits theaters, and Lionsgate’s “Run” with Sarah Paulson. Universal Pictures’ “The Turning” with Finn Wolfhard, Mackenzie Davis, and Brooklynn Prince, is also releasing in January.
The winter box office is still a few months away at this point, so a few of these films might be moved around for better positioning. Either way, thriller fans will have plenty of options to see in the new year. Orion Pictures didn’t release a trailer for the film at this time, but a preview will most likely hit the internet when the fall horror-thrillers start appearing on the big screen.
