Disney’s D23 Expo was filled with surprises this year, on and off the stage. While the company was promoting the upcoming Disney slate of “The Jungle Cruise” and “Mulan,” the social media team released a first look image of Emma Stone as Cruella de Vil from the upcoming live-action “Cruella” movie.
Disney shared the first look photo on social media, telling followers, “Here’s your first look at Emma Stone as Cruella de Vil in Disney’s Cruella. The film, also starring Emma Thompson, Paul Walter Hauser, and Joel Fry, comes to theaters May 28, 2021. #D23Expo”
Craig Gillespie directed the movie, which is scheduled to release in May 2021. Aline Brosh McKenna and Jez Butterworth wrote the script, and the movie is based on the “101 Dalmatians” animated classic released in 1961.
The movie won’t be the first time that a live-action Cruella de Vil appears on the big screen. In 1996 Glenn Close played the role in a live-action/CGI version of “101 Dalmations” for the studio. Stephen Herek directed that movie for Disney, which also featured Jeff Daniels, Joely Richardson, Hugh Laurie, and Joan Plowright. The movie opened at the top of the box office with a $33.5M debut and went on to make $320.6M worldwide for Disney.
The next live-action movie on the schedule is “Maleficent Mistress of Evil,” releasing in October. Joachim Rønning directed the sequel for Disney, working from a story by Linda Woolverton and a screenplay by Linda Woolverton, Micah Fitzerman-Blue & Noah Harpster. Robert Stromberg directed the original film but did not return for the follow-up. Angelina Jolie reprises her role from the first installment, and joining Jolie in the film are Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville. These actors are also reprising their roles from the first “Maleficent,” and they will be joined by newcomers Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Skrein, Harris Dickinson, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
