Disney brought the cast and crew of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” to D23 this year to tease the upcoming movie. The studio took a moment to reflect on the brilliance of the late Carrie Fisher, and to hype up the final installment to the new trilogy. The new movie takes place after the events of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” and production on the film ended back in February. While it may seem far off, the premiere of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” is only a few months away at this point, slated to release on December 20th. Disney put together a recap of the D23 event, showcasing more footage from the upcoming movie and Rey using a double-edged red lightsaber.

J.J Abrams directed the new installment, working off a script that he co-wrote with Chris Terrio. This movie is expected to end the Skywalker tales, and close the chapter on the characters from the original trilogy. After “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” Disney stated that the Star Wars franchise will go on hiatus, but a new trilogy, with all-new heroes, is already in the works.

In the meantime, Star Wars fans will have the live-action “The Mandalorian” to watch on Disney+ when it launches later this year, and a new season of the animated-series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” Disney is also working on an untitled Cassian Andor series starring Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk for the Star Wars Universe on Disney+. Disney also confirmed that Ewan McGregor is returning for a Kenobi series on the platform.

The cast for “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” includes Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Billie Lourd, and Kelly Marie Tran. The new film will add Keri Russell and Billy Dee Williams to the story as well. The odds are good that Mark Hamill will appear somewhere in the movie, and the project used earlier works of the late Carrie Fisher to close her role in the story.

Disney is hoping to rule the December 2019 box office this year with “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.” The three highest-grossing openings in December already belong to the Star Wars franchise, and it will be interesting to see where Episode IX lands on the list. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” had the highest December opening of all time. amd the film made $247M on its debut weekend in 2015 before going on to make over $2B for the studio. “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” had the second highest opening for a December release, and brought in $220M before going on to make over $1.3B in 2017. “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” landed in third-place overall on the chart, making $155M on its opening weekend in 2016 before ending its theatrical run with $1.05B worldwide for the studio.
