Google’s Google Stadia, the cloud-based game streaming service, confirmed that CD PROJEKT RED’s “Cyberpunk 2077” will be available on the platform next year. The first-person RPG is one of the most anticipated games scheduled to release in 2020, and one of the most significant titles to be confirmed for the platform.
“Cyberpunk 2077” is an open-world, action-adventure story set in Night City, a megalopolis obsessed with power, glamour and body modification. You play as V, a mercenary outlaw going after a one-of-a-kind implant that is the key to immortality. In the game, players can customize their character’s cyberware, skillset, and playstyle, and explore a vast city where the player’s choices shape the story and the world around them.
The game is the follow-up to CD PROJEKT RED’s “The Witcher” series, which ended with “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.” That game is considered by many to be one of the greatest RPG’s in modern gaming, and set the bar for future releases. The developers announced that “Cyberpunk 2077” is scheduled to release on April 16th, 2020, and it will be available for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Google announced that the Google Stadia version will launch the same year, but Google did not confirm a release date at this time, only stating that it should be ready in 2020.
Google released a developer’s diary online for the announcement. The company released the video on social media, telling fans, “Cyberpunk 2077 is coming to Stadia! Go behind-the-scenes with CD PROJEKT RED and learn more about Cyberpunk’s open-ended gameplay.” Players can watch that video below.
While cloud gaming has been around for a few years, it’s still a growing market. The service allows low-end PCs to play top tier games on higher settings, by streaming the video from the cloud. The actual GPU and CPU rendering for the game is done on Google’s hardware, so your computer only has to handle the video stream over the internet. In theory, this could offer players a way to play AAA titles on older PCs and laptops, without the need for upgrades or costly components.
