Netflix released a first look at ‘The Laundromat,” a movie based on the investigative reporting by Jake Bernstein which became known as the Panama Papers. You probably remember the headlines about the Panama Papers Scandal from a few years ago, which included world leaders like former UK Prime Minister David Cameron, and former Iceland Prime Minister Sigmunder Gunnlaugsson. Another name linked to the scandal is Donald Trump, so it will be interesting to see if he’s mentioned in the movie, since he’s already not a fan of Meryl Streep.
The story follows Ellen Martin (Academy Award winner Meryl Streep), who begins investigating a fake insurance policy. During her investigation, she finds questionable dealings that can be linked to a Panama City law firm and its vested interest in helping the world’s wealthiest citizens amass even larger fortunes through tax shelters and off-shore banking. The founding partners include Jürgen Mossack (Academy Award winner Gary Oldman) and Ramón Fonseca (Golden Globe nominee Antonio Banderas), and both of them are experts in shell companies and offshore accounts that help the rich avoid taxes, fees, and criminal records.
Academy Award winner Steven Soderbergh directed the movie, working off a screenplay by Scott Z. Burns. As we mentioned earlier, the movie is based on “Secrecy World” by Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter Jake Bernstein. The film is produced by Lawrence Grey, Gregory Jacobs, Michael Sugar, and Burns. You can watch the official trailer for the movie below, which is coming exclusively to Netflix this Fall.
The cast also includes Jeffrey Wright, Melissa Rauch, Jeff Michalski, Jane Morris, Robert Patrick, David Schwimmer, Cristela Alonzo, Larry Clarke, Will Forte, Chris Parnell, Nonso Anozie, Larry Wilmore, Jessica Allain, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Matthias Schoenaerts, Rosalind Chao, Kunjue Li, Ming Lo, with James Cromwell, and Sharon Stone.
