The upcoming Mortal Kombat movie has started adding names to the cast list. New Line added Ludi Lin, Sisi Stringer, and Mechad Brooks to the cast to play Liu Kang, Mileena, and Jax Bridges respectively. Joe Taslim is currently scheduled to play Sub-Zero in the film, and if everything goes according to plan, Tadanobu Asano will play Raiden. Asano was one of the most recent additions, though the actor is still going through final negotiations at this time.
Simon McQuoid is directing the reboot for the studio, with James Wan and Todd Garner serving as producers. The executive producers on the film are Larry Kasanoff, E. Bennett Walsh, Michael Clear, and Sean Robins
Paul W.S. Anderson directed the first “Mortal Kombat” movie back in 1995. The adaptation opened at the top of the domestic box office with a $23M debut and made over $122M worldwide. John R. Leonetti directed the sequel in 1997, but the movie did not do as well as the original. “Mortal Kombat: Annihilation” won the weekend when it hit theaters in late November after a $16.7M debut, but the film only made $51.3M worldwide in theaters.
The original movie featured Christopher Lambert, Robin Shou, Linden Ashby, Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, and Talisa Soto. The follow-up brought back a few names, including Robin Shou and Talisa Soto, and introduced James Remar, Sandra Hess, Lynn ‘Red’ Williams, and Marjean Holden.
With almost 80 characters from the games to choose from, it will be interesting to see which fighters make it to the big screen for the new reboot. New Line hasn’t confirmed the entire cast list at this time, but more information on the plot and further casting details should be released when the movie goes into production. Until then, fans have two Mortal Kombat movies to stream, and they make for a pretty entertaining double-feature.
