Marvel and Gemma Chan might be teaming up for a new character in “The Eternals” movie. Multiple outlets are now reporting that Chan is in talks with Marvel to play an unannounced character for the movie, which would be her second role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Chan first appeared in the MCU in “Captain Marvel,” taking on the role of Minn-Erva alongside Brie Larson, Jude Law, and Djimon Hounsou. It’s unclear if Chan is simply reprising her role for “The Eternals” movie, or taking on an entirely new character altogether. Chan’s character in “Captain Marvel” was a blue-skinned alien, so it wouldn’t be hard to change up her appearance if Marvel wanted her for another character.
Chan also starred in “Mary Queen of Scotts” as Bess of Hardwick, and as Petronella in “London Fields” alongside Cara Delevingne and Amber Heard. Chan took the role of Astrid Young Teo in Jon M. Chu’s hit “Crazy Rich Asians” with Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Michelle Yeoh.
Marvel confirmed “The Eternals” at San Diego Comic-Con this year as part of the studio’s Phase 4 roadmap. Chloé Zhao is directing the movie for Marvel Studios, which is scheduled to premiere on November 6, 2020. The current cast list includes Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Angelina Jolie, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, Lia McHugh, and Don Lee.
In the comics, the Eternals are godlike beings that fight the Deviants. Both the Eternals and the Deviants were created and experimented on by the Celestials, and both started out as humanoid races before the Celestials intervened.
“The Eternals” may play a significant role in Marvel‘s Phase 4 story, but the film is just one of many. Marvel Studios is also working on a “Black Widow” standalone movie, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” and “Thor: Love and Thunder.” Disney is also releasing “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier”, “WandaVision,” “Loki,” “What-If?,” and “Hawkeye” on Disney+.
