Netflix is expanding the company’s animated slate, adding new content in the adult-comedy, anime, and pre-school genres. Most recently, Netflix announced a new partnership with Kenya Barris and Scott Mescudi to create an all-new adult animated music series based on Kid Cudi’s upcoming album, Entergalactic.
According to Netflix’s announcement, the adult animated series will showcase music from the new album, which follows a young man on his journey to discover love. Kenya Barris (Black-ish, Girls’ Trip) will executive produce the series under his production company, Khalabo Ink Society. The deal is part of Barris’ overall deal with Netflix.
Netflix also confirmed that Scott Mescudi (How To Make It In America, Westworld) will write, star, and executive produce the series, along with Ian Edelman (How To Make It In America, The After Party) who also serves as writer and executive producer.
Netflix’s adult animated series have been popular in the past. “BoJack Horseman” already has five seasons on the platform, and “Tuca & Bertie” launched on Netflix earlier this year.
The company is also expanding its preschool slate, adding “DreamWorks Dragons Rescue Riders,” “Hello Ninja,” “StarBeam,” “DreamWorks Go, Dog. Go!,” “What-To-Doodles,” “Izzy Bee’s Koala World,” and “Emily’s Wonder Lab” to the schedule.
“With high-quality, age-appropriate programming for kids at every age and stage, we want to help young people find and connect with the stories and characters they love on Netflix,” said Melissa Cobb, vice president of original animation at Netflix. “We are also here to empower parents to find the shows that are just right for their families during whatever time they feel is appropriate to enjoy entertainment.”
These titles join Netflix’s rapidly expanding anime slate, which continues to add original series every year. At this year’s Netflix Loves Anime Expo the company confirmed “Cannon Busters,” “Levius,” “Seis Manos,” “Trese,” and “Rilakkuma and Kaoru.” Netflix already has several popular anime series available to subscribers, including “ULTRAMAN,” “Aggretsuko,” “Castlevania,” “Devilman Crybaby,” “GODZILLA: The Planet Eater,” “BAKI,” “Violet Evergarden,” “B: The Beginning,” and “The Seven Deadly Sins.” Other upcoming projects include a “Magic: The Gathering” series, “Pacific Rim,” “Altered Carbon,” “Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045,” and “Transformers – War for Cybertron.”
