The Marvel Cinematic Universe is expanding, and The Eternals are coming. The new movie, “The Eternals,” was the first phase 4 movie confirmed during Marvel’s big Hall H comic-con presentation on Saturday. The cast for the movie includes Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Richard Madden, Brian Tyree Henry, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, and Don Lee.

While not as well known as Captain America and The Hulk, the Eternals have been around a long time in the comics. The beings were created millions of years ago when aliens experiments on humans. Just like the superheroes found on Earth, they resemble humans, and they each have incredible powers. They often fight for the good side, living in space in a secluded city far away. The Eternals frequently visit Earth in the comics, and sometimes one or more of the Eternals have lived among us through stages of humanity. In the comics, many of the gods and deities from Earth’s early civilizations were actually the Eternals. Even Thanos, in the comics, was an Eternal mixed with genes from the enemy (or Deviants). Thanos and Deviants share the purple skin and a tendancy to be evil. This could be the link between phase 3 and phase 4 in the MCU, but we will have to wait for more confirmations.

The Eternals aren’t the same as the Celestials, which have already appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Celestials are some of the oldest beings in the comics, and they created the Eternals. In “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” we met Ego, played by Kurt Russel, who was a Celestial. In that movie, he changed his appearance to mate with beings across the Universe, hoping to create an offspring that shares his powers. Ego hoped to reshaped the Universe as he saw fit, and create a perfect realm.

Captain Marvel had a touch of the Celestials in the story. The Skrulls, or the shapeshifters that Captain Marvel fought and befriended, were also created by the Celestials.
