Paramount Pictures dropped the first trailer for “Top Gun: Maverick,” the big sequel to “Top Gun” landing in theaters on July 18th. Tom Cruise returns to the franchise for the new installment, starring alongside Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Ed Harris, and Lewis Pullman. Joseph Kosinski directed the sequel for the studio. Paramount Pictures released the trailer during the big Comic-Con weekend, just as fans are landing in San Diego to celebrate everything great in our pop culture.

The original “Top Gun” launched in 1986, with Tony Scott directing Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Meg Ryan, and Tim Robbins. The movie opened at number-one on the domestic charts with an $8.1M debut before making over $365.8M for the studio. The movie helped to launch Tom Cruise’s early career, and he went on to make “The Color of Money,” “Cocktail,” and “Rain Man” after the success of the film.

Fans of the original flying ace can watch the trailer below, and this marks the first official trailer release from the studio.

“Top Gun: Maverick” is expected to launch on June 26th, 2020, but that date might change depending on what other films are hitting theaters around that time. Warner Bros. Pictures is releasing “Wonder Woman: 1984” at the beginning of the month, with Universal Pictures expected to release the horror thriller “Candyman” the following week. The other big releases in June 2020 include the animated movie “Soul,” and the musical drama “In the Heights” from Warner Bros. Pictures. Jon Chu is directing that adaptation, with Corey Hawkins and Jimmy Smits.

Paramount Pictures gave “Top Gun: Maverick” a 2020 release date at this point, and a firm premiere date will be announced over the next few months. Until then, Maverick fans have the new trailer to watch, and you can re-watch the original “Top Gun” to get excited about the next big release.
