After a few weeks of teasers “Hustlers” released an official trailer on Tuesday night. The movie stars Constance Wu, Jennifer Lopez, Julia Stiles, Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart, Lizzo, and Cardi B, and hits theaters on September 13th. Lorene Scafaria wrote and directed “Hustlers” for the studio, with Elaine Goldsmith Thomas, Jessica Elbaum, Jennifer Lopez, Benny Medina, Will Ferrell, and Adam McKay serving as executive producers.
The story follows a crew of savvy former strip club employees who band together to turn the tables on their Wall Street clients. The film is inspired by the article published by New York Magazine entitled “The Hustlers at Scores” written by Jessica Pressler.
“Hustlers” is Constance Wu’s follow-up to “Crazy Rich Asians,” which dominated the box office back in 2018. Directed by Jon Chu, the movie opened at number-one with a $26.5M debut weekend against “Mile 22” and “Alpha.” The rom-com went on to make over $238.5M for the studio, and featured Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, and Awkwafina.
Jennifer Lopez is also expected to star in the romantic-comedy “Marry Me” from director Kat Coiro. That project, based on the graphic novel by Bobby Crosby, also features Owen Wilson and Maluma. The film is still in pre-production, and no release date is available at this time. With “Hustlers” ready for release, we might hear more about the movie over the next few months as it nears production.
“Hustlers” hits theaters during a busy month at the box office, but the movie is one of the few comedies on the schedule. “IT: Chapter 2” starts the month, with John Crowley’s “The Goldfinch” opening against “Hustlers” the following weekend. Brad Pitt’s “Ad Astra” and “Rambo: Last Blood” battle “Hustlers” during the film’s follow up weekend in theaters, followed by “21 Bridges,” the animated comedy “Abominable and the Blumhouse thriller “The Hunt” on September 27th.
