Godzilla fans can watch “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” on Digital on August 6th, or buy the 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD version on August 27th. Michael Dougherty (Krampus, Trick’ r Treat, Superman Returns) directed the film, which stars Kyle Chandler, Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga, and Millie Bobby Brown.
Dougherty directed the movie from a script he wrote with Zach Shields, and a story by Max Borenstein, Dougherty and Shields. The film also features Bradley Whitford, Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins, Charles Dance, Thomas Middleditch, Aisha Hinds, Oscar nominee David Strathairn, Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe, and Golden Globe nominee Ziyi Zhang.
“Godzilla: King of the Monsters” hit theaters back in May, topping the charts on opening weekend and bringing in over $47M for the studio. The movie went on to make over $383.9M worldwide.
Gareth Edwards directed the “Godzilla” reboot in 2014, which made over $529M worldwide and starred Aaron Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkins, David Strathairn, and Bryan Cranston. In 2017 the studio released the spinoff “Kong: Skull Island,” with director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, and stars Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, and John C. Reilly. Kong’s installment made $61M on its opening weekend and brought in $566M worldwide.
“Godzilla: King of the Monsters” opened against “Rocketman” and “MA,” two films that did well in theaters. Disney’s “Aladdin” and “John Wick 3: Parabellum” were also doing well in theaters when Godzilla stomped onto the scene. While King of the Monsters showed signs of monster fatigue with audiences, Warner Bros. Pictures is still releasing “Godzilla vs. Kong” in 2020.
