Paramount Pictures’ “Crawl” is scaring its way into the summer box office this weekend. The thriller brought in $1M in preview showings on Thursday night, outpacing FOX’s “Stuber” which brought in $750K. Horror-thrillers are usually hit or miss at the summer box office, and “Crawl” is off to a great start despite a lot of competition.

Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) directed “Crawl” for the studio, with Craig Flores, Sam Raimi, and Aja serving as executive producers. The movie stars Kaya Scodelario, Barry Pepper, and Ross Anderson.

The film picks up after a massive hurricane hits a small Florida town. The story follows a young woman who is searching for her missing father, ignoring the orders to evacuate. She finds him gravely injured in the crawl space of their family home, and the two become trapped by the floodwaters. As time runs out to escape the storm, Haley and her father discover that the rising water level is the least of their fears as alligators are now stalking them down.

“Crawl” won’t have an easy weekend at the box office, and is opening during the follow-up weekend for “Spider-Man: Far From Home” which made $185M last week. Disney’s “Toy Story 4” and Universal’s “Yesterday” is still in theaters, and next week is the big premiere of Disney’s “The Lion King,” which is expected to dominate the box office. Looking ahead into late July and early August, these films will have to battle “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw,” which will most likely push all of the smaller films off the top five chart.

On Thursday night the film only had to battle “Stuber,” showing that the film has the potential to become a hit, but it might not be able to stand out during the crowded summer box office. We will know more when the Friday estimates are released, but it seems that “Crawl” will take a sizable bite out of the “Stuber” opening weekend. Michael Dowse directed “Stuber,” which features Dave Bautista, Kumail Nanjiani, and Mira Sorvino.

“Crawl” isn’t the only aquatic thriller on the market this summer, “47 Meters Down: Uncaged” hits theaters on August 16th. That movie features John Corbett, Nia Long, Brec Bassinger, Corinne Foxx, Sophie Neliisse, Brianne Tju, and Sistine Rose Stallone.
