The “Fast & Furious” franchise added two familiar names to the “Fast & Furious 9” cast sheet. Vin Diesel announced that Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren are returning for the next installment, which is currently scheduled to release on May 22, 2020.

The other stars include Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel, and John Cena.

Fans should remember Theron as Cipher, the cyberterrorist from “Fate of the Furious.” That was the same film that introduced moviegoers to Magdalene Shaw, played by Helen Mirren. In the story, Magdalene is the mother of Deckard Shaw, the character played by Jason Statham. Mirren and Statham are also featured in the upcoming spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw.”

“Fast & Furious 9” was going to release in April, but the studio moved the film, giving it a prime Memorial Day weekend slot on May 22, 2020. The schedule change puts “Fast & Furious 9” against the new “SpongeBob Movie.”

There are still plenty of open spots on the May 2020 schedule. A Marvel movie is expected to premiere at the start of the month, followed by “Greyhound” with Tom Hanks, and the comedy “Legally Blonde 3” with Reese Witherspoon. The other big releases currently scheduled for that month include the “Scooby” animated-comedy and Disney’s long-awaited “Artemis Fowl” adaptation.

Universal Pictures released “Fate of the Furious,” the eighth film in the franchise, in 2017. Directed by F. Gary Gray, the movie made $98M over its opening weekend and went on to make over $1.2B worldwide. The franchise has made over $5B for Universal Pictures since the first film hit theaters in 2009.

The highest-grossing film in the franchise was “Furious 7,” the final installment to feature Paul Walker. That movie released in 2015 and made over $1.5B for the studio. The weakest link in the chain was “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift” in 2006, which made $158M worldwide.

The next installment to the franchise is the first spinoff, called “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.” Universal is releasing the movie on August 2nd, and the film features Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Idris Elba, Eddie Marsan, Vanessa Kirby, and Helen Mirren.
