After releasing the behind-the-scenes teaser earlier this week, Univeral Pictures released the first official trailer for “CATS.” The musical adaptation of the Broadway production is hitting theaters this winter and features an all-star cast. The film stars Idris Elba, Rebel Wilson, Ian McKellen, Judi Dench, James Corden, Taylor Swift, Ray Winstone, Jennifer Hudson, Mette Towley, Jason Derulo, Zizi Strallen, and Melissa Madden-Gray. Oscar-winner Tom Hooper directed the film, and just like the Broadway production, the movie is based on “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” by T.S. Eliot.
Movie fans might know Tom Hooper best from his work on “The King’s Speech,” “Les Misérables,” and “The Danish Girl.” Hooper teamed up with choreographer Wayne McGregor and casting director Lucy Bevan to bring “CATS” to the big screen.
“CATS” is expected to hit the box office on December 20th, but it won’t be running unopposed. That’s the same weekend that Disney is releasing “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” and Warner Bros. Pictures is releasing the action comedy “Superintelligence” with Melissa McCarthy. Sony Pictures is releasing the “Jumanji: The Next Level” the weekend before “CATS” hits theaters.
The Broadway adaptation was one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history. The production held its world premiere at the New London Theatre in 1981 and ran for 21 record-breaking years with almost 9,000 performances. In 1983 the Broadway production became the recipient of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The Broadway run of “CATS” ran for 18 years.
Fans of musicals also have “Wicked” to look forward to in 2020. Universal Pictures has Stephen Daldry directing the movie adaptation of the Broadway hit, but details on the production are slim at the moment. The studio will confirm the cast when the film moves into production, which should be later this year.
