Showtime’s upcoming “Penny Dreadful” spinoff, called “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels,” rounded out the cast on Tuesday. Michael Gladis joined the show’s first season as a series regular, with Lorenza Izzo, Adam Rodriguez, Thomas Kretschmann, Dominic Sherwood, and Ethan Peck featured in smaller roles.
The series stars Natalie Dormer, Daniel Zovatto, Kerry Bishé, Adriana Barraza, Rory Kinnear, Jessica Garza, Johnathan Nieves and Tony and Emmy winner Nathan Lane. The network also confirmed that Amy Madigan, Brent Spiner, and Lin Shaye will also be featured as recurring guest stars. Showtime hasn’t confirmed a premiere date for the new show, and we will have to wait a little longer to get a first-look trailer for the debut season.
John Logan, the creator, writer and executive producer of the Emmy nominated original series, continues in those same roles. Michael Aguilar also serves as executive producer on the project.
The original “Penny Dreadful” featured Josh Hartnett, Eva Green, Billie Piper, Reeve Carney, Timothy Dalton, and Sarah Greene.
According to Showtime, production on the drama series is expected to begin later this year. The network calls the new spinoff a “spiritual descendant” of the original series, and usually doesn’t refer to the second installment as a sequel in its marketing. The story opens in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega is embroiled in a story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism.
The network teased the story adding, “Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.”
