Universal Pictures confirmed the release date on Wednesday, as well as the cast list which also includes J Balvin, Rachel Bloom, Flula Borg, Kelly Clarkson, James Corden, Ester Dean, Jamie Dornan, Gustavo Dudamel, Ron Funches, Caroline Hjelt, Aino Jawo, Kunal Nayyar, Ozzy Osbourne, Anderson Paak, Anthony Ramos, Sam Rockwell, Betsy Sodaro, Karan Soni, Kenan Thompson, and Charlyne Yi. Walt Dohrn, who served as co-director on “Trolls,” returned to the franchise to direct the sequel. Gina Shay also returned to produce. The film is co-directed by David P. Smith and co-produced by Kelly Cooney Cilella, both of whom also worked on the first movie. “Trolls World Tour” will feature original music by Justin Timberlake, who earned an Oscar nomination in 2016 for his hit single “Can’t Stop the Feeling!,” and will feature a score by Theodore Shapiro (2016’s Ghostbusters, The Devil Wears Prada).
The movie is a sequel to DreamWorks Animation’s 2016 musical hit. The original installment was an instant success, opening in second-place behind “Doctor Strange” with a $46M debut weekend. The animated musical went on to make over $346.8M worldwide for Universal Pictures and Dreamworks. The new adventure follows Poppy (Kendrick) and Branch (Timberlake) as they discover that they are but one of six different Troll tribes scattered over six different lands, and each tribe is devoted to a different kind of music.
A member of hard-rock royalty, Queen Barb (Rachel Bloom), aided by her father King Thrash (Ozzy Osbourne), wants to destroy all other kinds of music to let rock reign supreme. With the fate of the world at stake, Poppy and Branch set out to visit all the other lands to unify the Trolls in harmony against Barb, who’s looking to upstage them all.
