Square Enix’s E3 event this weekend brought with it a lot of information from the “Final Fantasy” franchise, as well as a long list of new and upcoming games for multiple platforms. While Final Fantasy is still pushing the remasters, other releases like “Oninaki” and “Outsiders” give players new IPs to focus on.
The big-ticket item this year is the “Final Fantasy VII” remake. The title is a reimagining of the original game from 1997. The new release features a hybrid battle system that merges real-time action with strategic, command-based combat. The company also revealed details of special editions including the Deluxe Edition and Square Enix exclusive “1st Class Edition” for the ultimate collector.
The Deluxe Edition contains a hardback art book featuring concept art, a Mini-Soundtrack CD, Summon Materia DLC allowing players to summon Cactuar in game, and a Sephiroth SteelBook Case. The Digital Deluxe Edition contains a digital art book, a digital Mini-Soundtrack, and Summon Materia DLC allowing players to summon Carbuncle and Cactuar in game. The “1st Class Edition” includes all Deluxe Edition content, the Carbuncle Summon Materia DLC, as well as a Play Arts Kai Cloud Strife and Hardy Daytona box set (bundled separately), which is available to pre-order in limited quantities from the Square Enix Store.
The company stated that players who pre-order any version of the game from select retailers will also receive the Chocobo Chick Summon Materia DLC at launch. Those who pre-order any digital edition from the PlayStation Store will also receive the Cloud & Sephiroth Dynamic Theme for the PS4. The remake will be available first for the PS4 on March 3, 2020.
You can find an E3 Promotional page right here on Amazon, the retailer makes it easy to find the new games and collector’s editions that were announced this week.
The company also announced that “Final Fantasy VIII” is getting a remaster, and previewed the new expansion for “Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers.”
Square Enix also debut a new “Dying Light 2” trailer. The new release is the highly anticipated sequel to the open world survival horror action game. Players got their first glimpse of the game’s new protagonist as he navigates a world torn apart by the ravages of the infection, where every decision counts and death lurks around every corner. The video shows a quick glimpse of The City – a post-apocalyptic, modern dark-age outpost. Here, 15 years after the events of the first Dying Light, humanity ekes out an existence while brutal factions vie for power, and the infected skulk in dark buildings and basements until night comes and they can reclaim the streets. Players meet the game’s protagonist, Aiden Caldwell, an infected survivor whose high-flying parkour skills and brutal combat ability make him a valuable asset in this crumbling metropolis. Through Aiden, the player will make impactful choices that shape the world as they play. “Dying Light 2” is set to be released on PC, PS4, and Xbox One in Spring 2020.
The company also debuted “Oninaki,” the latest action-RPG developed by the Tokyo RPG Factory team. The new release hits Nintendo Switch, PS4, and STEAM on August 22. “Oninaki” is the third title from Tokyo RPG Factory and the studio’s first foray into the action RPG genre. In the game, players will follow the story of Kagachi, a young watcher whose duty is to usher Lost Souls into the next world. After meeting a mysterious girl named Linne, his fate becomes entwined with blood and death. During the journey, players will also meet key characters like Kushi, an exemplary Watcher and trusted leader, Mayura, a Watcher with a kind heart, and the malicious Night Devil from a forgotten time.
Another big reveal was “Marvel’s Avengers,” an action-adventure game that combines cinematic storytelling with single-player and co-operative gameplay. Developed by Crystal Dynamics in collaboration with Eidos-Montréal, Crystal Northwest, and Nixxes Software, “Marvel’s Avengers” will release simultaneously for the PC, PS4, and Xbox on May 15, 2020. “Marvel’s Avengers” invites players to live their Super Hero dreams. The story begins at A-Day, where Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are unveiling a hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco — including the reveal of their own helicarrier powered by an experimental energy source. The celebration turns deadly when a catastrophic accident results in massive devastation. Blamed for the tragedy, the Avengers disband. Five years later, with all Super Heroes outlawed and the world in peril, the only hope is to reassemble Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
“Crystal Dynamics is one of the industry’s most talented and respected game development studios, and we couldn’t be more excited about their ambitious vision for Marvel’s Avengers,” said Jay Ong, EVP, Head of Games at Marvel Entertainment. “It will thrill our fans and serve as a key part of Marvel’s storytelling, delivering an authentic and innovative take on our heroes as never been seen before. This game is what’s next for the Avengers.”
“As super fans, working with Marvel and these characters is a dream come true and we are excited to finally reveal Marvel’s Avengers to the world,” said Scot Amos, Head of Studio at Crystal Dynamics. “This is our original take on these iconic Super Heroes. Leveraging our companies’ combined experience in epic action-adventure storytelling, we’re building a universe that fans will immerse themselves in for years to come.”
“We’ve assembled world-class developers from across the industry to bring players on an unforgettable journey,” said Ron Rosenberg, Head of Studio at Crystal Dynamics. “To ensure a truly heroic experience for all players, we’re announcing that our narrative will be delivered over multiple years, with no random loot boxes or pay-to-win scenarios. Every new Super Hero and region will be delivered to players at no additional cost if you own the core game. This is just the beginning of what we’ve got in store for our fans.”
“Outriders” will release on PC, PS4, and Xbox in Summer 2020.
“Outriders is the game that we have been wanting to make for years,” said Sebastian Wojciechowski, Studio Head of People Can Fly. “We’re very happy to be working with Square Enix on this project, it’s a big undertaking for us and the team has grown considerably to work on the Outriders project. We now have over 200 developers at four international studios working on this project to make it our most ambitious shooter to date. We’re very excited to finally unveil Outriders to the world, and we can’t wait to show you more of the game.”
“People Can Fly is the perfect partner for us to create a game like Outriders. They have a great history of creating high-quality shooters, plus an unmatched level of experience and expertise in the Unreal game engine, unrivalled in the gaming industry,” Said Lee Singleton, Co-Head of Studio at Square Enix External Studios.
