Anthony Mackie is starring in a new Netflix movie called “Outside the Wire.” Mikael Håfström (Escape Plan, 1408, Evil) is directing, with Brian Kavanaugh, Ben Pugh, Erica Steinberg, Jason Spire, and Mackie serving as producers.
Netflix confirmed that Rob Yescombe and Rowan Athale are writing the script for the new project, but the announcement only confirmed Mackie for the cast list.
The logline according to Netflix reads, “Set in the future, a drone pilot is sent into a deadly militarized zone where he finds himself working for an android officer tasked to locate a doomsday device before the insurgents do.”
According to Netflix’s announcement on Friday, principal photography on the movie starts later this summer. Josh Horsfield, Fred Berger, and Rory Aiken are serving as executive producers, with Charlie Morrison serving as co-producer.
Netflix stopped short of announcing a premiere date for “Outside the Wire,” but more information should be released over the next few weeks. We should also get a few casting announcements after the movie goes into production later this year. At that time, subscribers might get a first-look teaser at the sci-fi drama.
Netflix previously partnered with Automatik and 42 on “In The Shadow of the Moon” starring Boyd Holbrook, Michael C. Hall, Cleopatra Coleman, and Bokeem Woodbine. That movie is scheduled to release later this year.
Earlier this week, Netflix confirmed an adaptation of the children’s novel “Thelma the Unicorn” and “Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous.” The video streaming service also announced a new animated series based on the “Magic: The Gathering” franchise. According to the company, the Russo brothers will oversee the creation of an all-new storyline and expand on the stories of the Planeswalkers. The Planeswalkers are Magic’s unique magic-wielding heroes and villains, and the series will follow their adventures.
