Netflix’s “Awake” will star Gina Rodriguez (Someone Great, Miss Bala, Jane the Virgin), the video streaming service confirmed the casting on Friday afternoon. Directed by Mark Raso (Kodachrome), the film is based on a script that he wrote with his brother Joseph. “Awake” isn’t Mark Raso’s first deal with Netflix, his film “Kodachrome” sold to Netflix at TIFF 2017.
Netflix described the movie adding, “After a sudden global event wipes out all electronics and takes away humankind’s ability to sleep, chaos quickly begins to consume the world. Only Jill, an ex-soldier with a troubled past, may hold the key to a cure in the form of her own daughter.” Netflix continued, “The question is, can Jill safely deliver her daughter and save the world before she herself loses her mind.”
As of right now, Gina Rodriguez is the only confirmed casting for the project, but more information will be released as the movie enters into production. At that time we might get a teaser trailer, and a premiere date.
Entertainment One produced the movie for Netflix with producer Paul Schiff. Mark Gordon, Josh Phillips, Matt Jackson, Greg Poirier, Mark Raso, Joseph Raso, Gina Rodriguez, and Whitney Brown serve as executive producers, with co-executive producer Joanne Lee.
Fans of the actor can hear her voice in the upcoming Scooby-Doo animated comedy “Scoob” with Zac Efron, Mark Wahlberg, Amanda Seyfried, Jason Isaacs, Mckenna Grace, Will Forte, Ken Jeong, Ariana Greenblatt, and Tracy Morgan. Rodriguez is voicing the role of Velma Dinkley in the movie. Rodriguez is also working with Netflix in the upcoming live-action “Carmen Sandiego” movie, where she will play the lead. The actor’s latest film, “Miss Bala,” struggled at a crowded box office, but made $15M worldwide.
