Apple launched an updated MacBook Pro this week, offering faster 8th and 9th generation Intel Core processors. The new 15″ model boasts eight cores, the highest count yet in a MacBook Pro. Apple stated that the model offers two times faster performance than a quad-core MacBook Pro and 40% more performance than a 6-core MacBook Pro.
Apple is calling the eight-core MacBook the company’s fastest Mac notebook ever, and it should be a welcome sight to creatives. The new CPU joins the Retina display, SSDs, and the Apple T2 Security Chip under the hood.
“Whether it’s college students mastering a course of study, developers building world-class apps or video editors creating feature films, we’re constantly amazed at what our customers do with their MacBook Pro,” said Tom Boger, Apple’s senior director of Mac Product Marketing. “Now with 8-core processors for an incredible performance boost, along with its stunning Retina display, fast storage, all-day battery life and running macOS, MacBook Pro continues to be the world’s best pro notebook and we can’t wait to get it into our customer’s hands to see what they do next.”
You won’t take advantage of the high core count by browsing the web or streaming a Netflix video, and most games won’t even take advantage of an eight-core CPU. The new MacBooks were designed for photo and video editing, rendering, streaming multiple 4K videos, research, and music production. The 15-inch MacBook Pro now features the faster six-core and eight-core Intel Core processors, which offer Turbo Boost speeds up to 5.0 GHz. Apple packs a lot of components into a tight frame, so heat could be an issue with keeping the 5.0 GHz Turbo Boost going for long periods. The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar features faster quad-core processors with Turbo Boost speeds up to 4.7 GHz. Apple stated that when compared to the fastest quad-core 15-inch MacBook Pro, the new MacBook Pro with 8-core processors is up to two times faster.
The new MacBook Pro also features a new Retina display with 500 nits of brightness and support for the P3 wide color gamut, along with True Tone technology. Buyers will also find stereo speakers with wide-stereo sound, the familiar Touch ID, dynamic and contextual controls with Touch Bar, and a large Force Touch trackpad. The MacBook Pro also features SSD storage, the Apple T2 Security Chip, Thunderbolt 3 ports for data transfer, charging and connecting up to two 5K displays or four external GPUs.
The new models start at $1,799 and $2,399. The updated 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar and 15-inch MacBook Pro are available today on Apple and Amazon.
