A new Disney live-action movie hit theaters this weekend and it’s off to a predictably great start. “Aladdin” opened in theaters nationwide against the comedy “Booksmart” and the superhero thriller “Brightburn.” While Disney had an easy win this weekend, all three films will have a tough week ahead, taking on the king of lizards and the Rocketman himself.
“Aladdin” topped the box office with an $86M domestic debut across 4,476 locations this week. Guy Ritchie directed “Aladdin,” and the live action remake stars Will Smith, Naomi Scott, and Mena Massoud.
The new Disney release pushed Lionsgate’s “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” down to second place this weekend, but John Wick still made $24.3M across 3,850 locations. Now in its second week in theaters, the film has made over $100.9M domestically. Chad Stahelski directed “John Wick 3,” which stars Keanu Reeves, Halle Berry, Ian McShane, Laurence Fishburne, and Anjelica Huston.
Disney also took third-place this week thanks to the continued success of “Avengers: Endgame,” which made another $16.8M at 3,810 locations. The movie is in its fifth week in theaters, and has made over $798M domestically. “Avengers: Endgame” was directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the film features Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Karen Gillan, Paul Rudd, Josh Brolin, Brie Larson, Bradley Cooper (Voice), Elizabeth Olsen, Evangeline Lilly, Letitia Wright, Chadwick Boseman, and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Pokemon Detective Pikachu” dropped to fourth-place on the domestic charts with a $13.3M weekend across 3,824 locations nationwide. Now in its third week, the adaptation made over $116M for the studio. Rob Letterman directed “Detective Pikachu,” which stars Ryan Reynolds, Justice Smith, and Kathryn Newton.
Fifth-place went to “Brightburn,” which made $7.5M across 2,607 locations, just ahead of “Booksmart’s” $6.5M weekend across 2,505 locations. David Yarovesky directed “Brightburn,” starring Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, and Jackson A. Dunn. Olivia Wilde directed “Booksmart,” which stars Kaitlyn Dever, Beanie Feldstein, Will Forte, Lisa Kudrow, and Jason Sudeikis.
As we mentioned earlier, next weekend these films will have to battle the new “Godzilla 2” film, along with the thriller “Ma,” and the musical biopic “Rocketman.”
