Once fans got their first look at Paramount Pictures‘ “Sonic the Hedgehog” adaptation, social media became filled with bad Sonic memes. The trailer previewed a radical new design for the popular blue blur, and the first trailer didn’t win over fans. Following the backlash, the studio pushed the film back to 2020, and Sonic is getting a much-needed makeover.
The live-action and CG hybrid was scheduled to premiere in theaters this November and stars Jim Carrey as the evil Dr. Robotnik. The film’s director, Jeff Fowler, tweeted the announcement to fans, telling them that the studio was “taking a little more time to make Sonic just right.”
Joining Carrey in the adventure are James Mardsen, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Neal McDonough, and Adam Pally.
On social media, the studio describes the film, “Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination.”
The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic. If you missed the first-look trailer, you can see ‘original Sonic’ in the video below while it remains on YouTube.
As we mentioned earlier, Jeff Fowler directed the film for Paramount Pictures, working on a screenplay by Patrick Casey, Josh Miller, and Oren Uziel. Hajime Satomi, Haruki Satomi, Masanao Maeda, Toby Ascher, Nan Morales, and Tim Miller serve as executive producers on the film, with Neal H. Moritz, Toru Nakahara, and Takeshi Ito working as producers.
Sonic fans out there will just have to wait until 2020 to see how the film stacks up against “Detective Pikachu.”
