Dreamworks has a new Yeti movie on the way, and the studio releases a first-look trailer to get younger fans excited for the fuzzy premiere. “Abominable” is set to hit theaters this September, and the animated comedy features the voice talents of Chloe Bennet, Tenzing Norgay, Albert Tsai, Eddie Izzard, and Sarah Paulson.
The story picks up after a young girl named Yi encounters a Yeti on the roof of her apartment building in Shanghai. Yi, along with her mischievous friends, Jin and Peng, call the Yeti “Everest” and embark on an epic quest to reunite the magical creature with his family at the highest point on Earth.
It doesn’t take long before the friends learn that they will have to stay one-step ahead of Burnish, a wealthy man intent on capturing a Yeti, and a zoologist named Dr. Zara, to help Everest get home.
Jill Culton (Open Season, Monsters, Inc., Toy Story 2) directed the film for the studio, produced by Suzanne Buirgy (Kung Fu Panda 2, Home). Tim Johnson (Over the Hedge, Home, ANTZ) served as an executive producer on the project, with Todd Wilderman serving as co-director.
Fans of the genre can set a reminder to catch “Abominable” when it hits theaters on September 27th.
The release date puts “Abominable” against the crime-thriller “21 Bridges,” the drama “All Rise,” as well an untitled Blumhoise project. Going against those films means Dreamworks will be in the clear for younger audiences. The next animated feature to release after “Abominable” is “The Addams Family,” which isn’t hitting theaters until October 11th.
If an animated Yeti movie sounds familiar, that’s because Warner Bros. Pictures released the film “Smallfoot” in 2018. Written and directed by Karey Kirkpatrick, that movie featured Channing Tatum, James Corden, Zendaya, Common, LeBron James, Danny DeVito, and Gina Rodriguez. “Smallfoot” opened in second-place on opening weekend with a $23M debut behind the comedy “Nightschool.” The movie went on to make $83.2M domestically and over $214M worldwide.
