The sci-fi thriller “FREAKS” dropped a teaser trailer on Tuesday afternoon. The film is scheduled to hit theaters nationwide on August 23rd, and the movie features Emile Hirsch, Bruce Dern, Grace Park, Amanda Crew, and introduces Lexy Kolker. Fans of the genre can watch the teaser trailer below to get an early look at the project.
In the story, a disturbed father (Emile Hirsch) locks his bold 7-year-old daughter (Lexy Kolker) in a house, warning her of grave dangers outside. Things pick up when the mysterious Mr. Snowcone (Bruce Dern) convinces the girl to escape and join him on a quest for family, freedom, and revenge.
The film was an official selection of the Toronto International Film Festival and the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and won the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival Jury Prize. Other awards that the movie picked up along the way were the Vancouver International Fantastic Film Festival for Emerging Filmmaker, and the Paris International Fantastic Film Festival award for Best Film through the Audience Award.
The August 23 release date puts the film against Gerard Butler’s “Angel has Fallen;” Dave Bautista’s action comedy “My Spy;” Alex Kendrick’s “Overcomer;” and the horror-thriller “Ready or Not” with Adam Brody, Henry Czerny, and Andie MacDowell.
The other big horror hits and thrillers releasing in August are Lionsgate’s “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” on August 9th, and “47 Meters Down” on August 16th.
Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky co-wrote and co-directed the movie, as well as produced the project with Jordan Barber and Mitchell Waxman. M. Alan Stein, Rick Alyea, Philip Kim, and Elisabeth Costa de Beauregard served as executive producers.
