Netflix set a date for the new “Dark Crystal” series. The franchise is launching on Netflix on August 30th, allowing a new generation to experience one of Jim Henson’s classic stories.

Louis Leterrier directed the show for Netflix. The video streaming service ordered ten, one-hour episodes of the show, which features the voice talents of Taron Egerton, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Nathalie Emmanuel. They take the roles of Rian, Brea and Deet respectively, the three Gelfling heroes of the tale. Netflix confirmed that other Gelfling characters are voiced by Caitriona Balfe, Helena Bonham Carter, Harris Dickinson, Natalie Dormer, Eddie Izzard, Theo James, Toby Jones, Shazad Latif, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mark Strong, and Alicia Vikander.

The Skeksis and Mystics are voiced by Harvey Fierstein, Mark Hamill, Ralph Ineson, Jason Isaacs, Keegan-Michael Key, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Simon Pegg, and Andy Samberg. Netflix also announced that Aughra will be voiced by Donna Kimball, with additional characters voiced by puppeteers from the production, including Alice Dinnean, Louise Gold, Neil Sterenberg, and Victor Yerrid.

Netflix described the series adding, “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance returns to the world of Thra with an all-new adventure. When three Gelfling discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.”

As we mentioned earlier, the series is based on “The Dark Crystal,” the 1982 feature film from Jim Henson. The show tells a new story, set many years before the events of the movie. The film was created using a mix of classic puppetry and modern visual effects.

In the show, the world of Thra is dying. The Crystal of Truth is at the heart of Thra, but it is damaged, corrupted by the evil Skeksis. Things pick up when three Gelflings uncover the horrific truth behind the power of the Skeksis, and the adventure unfolds as the fires of rebellion are lit and an epic battle for the planet begins.

Lisa Henson, Louis Leterrier, and Halle Stanford serve as executive producers, with Jeffrey Addiss & Will Matthews, Javier Grillo-Marxuach, and Blanca Lista serving as co-executive producers.
