After pulling in over $57M last weekend, the John Wick franchise is returning to theaters in 2021. Lionsgate quickly announced a follow up the summer blockbuster, giving the franchise a May 21, 2021 release date.
The studio announced the film on social media, telling fans, “You have served. You will be of service. John Wick: Chapter 4 is coming – May 21, 2021.”
Other than the release date, the studio stopped short of confirming the cast and crew. While subject to change, the only other film set to release that day is “DC Super Pets” from Warner Bros. Pictures. “John Wick 3” is battling Disney’s live-action “Aladdin,” Olivia Wilde’s “Booksmart,” and Sony Pictures’ horror-thriller “Brightburn” in theaters this upcoming weekend. After that, “Godzilla 2,” the thriller “Ma,” and the musical biopic “Rocketman” are rushing into theaters to closeout the month.
Directed by David Leitch and Chad Stahelski, the first film opened with a meager $14M weekend, but the movie ended up making over $88M worldwide once word about the movie got around. Chad Stahelski returned to direct the second and third installments, with “John Wick Chapter 2” making over $30M on its debut before grossing over $171M globally. The last installment, “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum,” made $57M last weekend, taking the top spot on the domestic charts. “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” featured Keanu Reeves, Halle Berry, Ian McShane, Laurence Fishburne, Anjelica Huston, and Jason Mantzoukas.
More details on the cast and crew will be announced when the film goes into production, which should be in 2020. Until then, fans have two movies available on digital to watch, and a new film in theaters.
Fans of the franchise can keep “John Wick 4” on their radar for now, and circle May 21, 2021 on their calendars.
