After a long list of action films, comedies, and dramas, thriller fans have a new release at the box office this weekend. Sony Pictures’ “Brightburn” is releasing nationwide against Disney’s “Aladdin” and Olivia Wilde’s “Booksmart.” Brad Pitt’s sci-fi thriller “Ad Astra” was scheduled to release this weekend as well, but Disney pushed that film to a later release date following the Disney-FOX merger. “Brightburn” dropped a final trailer to get fans excited for the film’s upcoming release, and you can watch that video below.
The studio teased the movie on social media asking “What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister?”
The story is an upside-down Superman tale, with writers Brian and Mark Gunn creating a new superhero-horror genre. The movie stars Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Jackson A. Dunn, Matt Jones, and Meredith Hagner. David Yarovesky directed the film for the studio, working off a script written by the Gunns.
With “John Wick 3” dominating the box office last weekend, Brightburn’s debut won’t be an easy win for the studio. Disney’s “Aladdin,” directed by Guy Ritchie and featuring Will Smith, Naomi Scott, Nasim Pedrad, and Mena Massoud, gives the little ones something to see, but teens might choose “Booksmart” over horror. Directed by Olivia Wilde, the coming of age comedy stars Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein, with Jessica Williams, Will Forte, Lisa Kudrow, and Jason Sudeikis.
Disney’s “Aladdin” poses a more significant threat to Universal Pictures’ “A Dog’s Journey,” which only made $8M on its debut last weekend. With a new live-action Disney movie in the mix, the family-drama is unlikely to recover.
All of this week’s new releases will battle “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” “Ma,” and the musical “Rocketman” next weekend.
Elizabeth Banks directed the new “Charlies Angels” reboot, which she is also starring in as Bosely. The Angels are Naomi Scott, Kristen Stewart, and Ella Balinska. The reboot is also from Sony Pictures and is currently scheduled to hit theaters on November 1, 2019.
“Brightburn” will release in theaters on May 24, 2019.
